Dallas Sports

Dallas is a big league city, with big league teams in just about every professional sport. The NFL Dallas Cowboys are here. You'll also find the NBA Mavericks, the NHL Stars, Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers and Major League Soccer's FC Dallas. There is also a number of major Division I college sports programs in Dallas as well. Southern Methodist University or SMU, represents Conference USA in Division I college sports. The annual Cotton Bowl football game is played in Dallas. One of the longest running Professional Golf Tournaments in the country is held near the end of May each year in Dallas as well, the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Looking for a sporting event, you don't have to look very far in Dallas. From NFL football to NBA basketball, all year long one professional sports team or another is playing. And if the college game is more your style you can find that as well. There is one other thing; high school sports are huge in Texas. Friday night high school football games rival some college games in terms of attendance and enthusiasm. If golf is your game, you can catch a PGA event or get out on the course yourself. There are scores of golf course in the Dallas area.

Dallas Cowboy Football Tickets

The Dallas Cowboys have a new stadium located in Arlington, TX, which is just west of Dallas. The Cowboys, often called "America's Team" are also known for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Even though the new stadium can hold over 70,000, tickets to the Cowboy games can be tough to come by but there is a market. If you want a single game ticket, you will probably need to go to a ticket broker, unless of course you have a nice friend with season tickets. Expect to pay a premium. Cheap tickets are not likely.

Dallas Mavericks' Basketball Tickets

The Dallas Mavericks' basketball team plays at the Americans Airlines Center in the Victory Park area of Dallas. If you want tickets to Mavericks' games, they are available from the team and other sources. The Mavs first started play in the National Basketball Association 1980. This NBA team has been in the thick of the Western Division battles and the playoffs for the past few years. The Americans Airlines Arena is reachable via public transportation. Both busses and light rail run to the American Airlines Arena.

Dallas Stars Hockey Tickets

The Dallas Stars are members of the National Hockey league. Hockey in Dallas dates all the way back to 1941, when the first professional team, the Texans was formed. Various teams played in Dallas until about 1950. Then for the next 18 years, there was no professional hockey. Minor league hockey returned for 15 years starting in 1967. And then for another 11 years Dallas went without professional hockey. But with the arrival of the Dallas Stars in 1993 big league hockey was in town. Just six years later, the team won the Stanley Cup. Tickets for the Stars are available from the team. The Dallas Stars play at the American Airlines Center in the Victory Park section of Dallas. There is public transportation available to get to the arena, both bus and light rail.

Texas Rangers Baseball Tickets

The Texas Rangers play in Arlington, which is west of Dallas. The stadium was built in 1994 and has a brick façade. The Rangers Ballpark in Arlington has a natural grass playing surface and seats a little over 49,000 fans. Prices for tickets to Rangers games range from over $200 all the way down to just $3 for kids under the age of 13. Not a bad deal. Tickets are easily available from the Texas Rangers.

FC Dallas Soccer Tickets

FC Dallas, formerly known as the Dallas Burn is the area’s Major League Soccer franchise. They play, April through October, in north Dallas’ Pizza Hut Park. Pizza Hut Park is located north of Dallas in Frisco, Texas. The park is more than just the soccer stadium though. There are 17 other soccer fields at the park that provide playing areas for many youth teams. Tickets for FC Dallas matches are available from the team or Ticketmaster.

HP Byron Nelson Championship Tickets

Memorial Day weekend brings one of the longest running Professional Golf Tour events to Dallas. The HP Byron Nelson Championship traces itself back to 1944. It has been played annually for 41 years. The tournament is named for, can you guess, Byron Nelson, one of the greatest golfers ever. In 1945, he won 18 tournaments, including 11 straight. He also set a record for the lowest scoring average (68.33), which wasn't broken for 55 years. The tournament is played at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas, west of Dallas. Tickets are available from the tournament office or from Ticketmaster. Parking is provided at Texas Stadium and a free shuttle bus runs from there.

College Football Tickets and Events

Division I college football is played by Southern Methodist University. SMU is a member of Conference USA. SMU plays most of its games in Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The on campus stadium seats about 32,000. The stadium is named after Gerald J. Ford, a billionaire banker who is an alumnus and made a large donation to help build the stadium. He is not the former US President Gerald R. Ford. The other big college football venue is the Cotton Bowl, which is located at the Texas State Fair Grounds. The final Cotton Bowl Classic, the annual game that was played around New Years day, was played at the Cotton Bowl January 2nd, 2009. The game will now be played at the new Dallas Cowboy stadium in Arlington. The Cotton Bowl Stadium isn't going away though. Texas and Oklahoma will continue to play there for the next few years as well as other college teams. Baylor and Texas Tech have a game planned for 2010. Tickets to the games are available from the individual schools or at the stadium.

Texas Motor Speedway Tickets

To the north and west of Dallas is the Texas Motor Speedway. NASCAR comes to the Texas Motor Speedway in the spring and the fall. The Samsung 500 Weekend features both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series. It is held in the spring. The fall brings Dickies 500. The Texas Motor Speedway also hosts other racing events during the year. Tickets are available from the Speedway or Ticketmaster.

Golf

Getting out on the links is easy in the Dallas area. There are scores of courses, including six that are operated by the city of Dallas. The fees on the city courses range from a low of $8 for twilight play on some of the courses, to a high of $43 for weekend rounds at Tenison Highlands.
